About Monolithi Beach
Monolithi is the long beach that runs up the Ionian coast north of Preveza. The mapped beach alone is about 12–13 km, and the shoreline carries on past Kanali to Kastrosykia, which is why you will see it described as anything from 13 to 25 km long.
Behind the southern part lies the Aesthetic Forest of Monolithi, a protected pine forest. The land here is also part of the archaeological zone of Ancient Nikopolis, the city Octavian founded after the Battle of Actium (31 BC), so the shore has stayed free of buildings. The ruins of Nikopolis are just inland, an easy add-on to a beach day.
The beach is a mix of sand and fine pebbles. In summer some sections have sunbeds and beach bars. Walk a little further and you can usually find an empty stretch.
The name comes from a single rock ("monolithi") that once stood a few metres off the shore. According to local accounts it was broken up by mortar fire in 1943 and now sits just below the surface as a reef.
Good to know
- Facilities are only at the organised sections. Further along there's no shade, so bring your own.
- On the open Ionian side, afternoon wind and waves are common. Take care when the sea is up.
- It pairs well with a morning visit to Ancient Nikopolis, a few minutes inland.
