Travel responsibly in Preveza
How to help keep Preveza clean and unspoiled: take your rubbish with you, the summer fire rules, wildlife in the Ambracian Gulf, camping, churches and monuments.
Much of what makes Preveza special is still unspoiled: quiet beaches without fences, lagoons full of birds, olive groves, small chapels and villages where people still fish and farm. We would like it to stay that way, for the people who live here and for everyone who visits next. A few simple habits make all the difference.
Leave the beach as you found it
- Take your rubbish with you, including cigarette ends, bottle caps and food scraps. Many of our beaches are wild, with no bins and no daily cleaning.
- Use the bins in villages and at organised beaches, and the recycling bins where there are any.
- Leave shells, pebbles and sand where they are, and don't drive or park on the sand or the dunes.
Fire: the biggest risk in summer
- From 1 May to 31 October it is fire season in Greece. Lighting any fire in forests, farmland or open country is forbidden without a permit from the Fire Service, and that includes beach barbecues.
- Never throw a cigarette end from a car or onto dry ground.
- If you see smoke or fire, call 112 or the Fire Service on 199 straight away.
Wildlife and protected nature
- The Ambracian Gulf is a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and a national park, home to Dalmatian pelicans, dolphins and sea turtles. Watch from a distance and keep to the roads and paths.
- Don't feed or chase animals, and keep drones and boats well away from birds, dolphins and turtles.
- Keep dogs on a lead near the lagoons and on busy beaches.
Camping
Wild camping, and staying overnight in a tent, caravan or camper van on beaches or anywhere outside an organised campsite, is not allowed in Greece. The area has organised campsites; please use them.
Monuments, churches and sights
- Don't climb on ancient walls, and never take stones or finds from archaeological sites: everything there is protected by law.
- Churches are places of worship. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, keep your voice down, and ask before taking photos inside.
Respect local life
- Park where you don't block narrow village streets, farm tracks, harbours or the boats of the fishermen.
- Keep the noise down at night, in villages and near homes.
- Buy local: eat at local tavernas and buy local oil, honey and fish. It is the best way to support the place you came to see.
