About Alonaki Beach (Fanari)
Alonaki is a small cove on the coast of Fanari, between Loutsa and Ammoudia, near the village of Valanidorachi. Pine forest grows down the cliffs on both sides. That gives the beach natural shade and the water its deep emerald colour.
The shore is sand mixed with pebbles, and there are rocks in the water a couple of metres out. The sea gets deeper gradually but there are no long shallows, so it suits swimmers and snorkellers more than toddlers. A small islet sits across the bay and confident swimmers can reach it. The rocks on either side are good for snorkelling.
The beach is mostly unorganised: one canteen with snacks and drinks, and a few sunbeds and umbrellas for rent. The last part of the drive is a dirt road through the trees, with parking near the beach.
The Acheron river and the Necromanteion of Ephyra are close by, so Alonaki fits easily into a day trip up the coast.
Note: there is also a different beach called Alonaki in Preveza town, near Pantokratoras. This page is about the cove at Fanari.
Good to know
- Watch your step on the rocks at the water's edge and in the sea. Water shoes help.
- The dirt access road is fine for normal cars. Just take it slowly.
- In high summer it fills up by late morning because the cove is small. Go early.
