About Kastrosykia Beach
Kastrosykia is a small village about 22 km north-north-west of Preveza, 120 m above the Ionian Sea. The Preveza–Igoumenitsa road passes just south of it, and below, on the coast, lies the seaside settlement of Pidima Kyras, next to and west of Cape Kastrosykia. The Arethon river reaches the sea just south-east of it. In summer people come here mainly for the nearby beaches, where there are campsites.
At the southern edge of the village, next to the main road, stands the Monastery of Agia Pelagia. Its church dates from the 17th century and was renovated in 1613 and 1795; it is a simple cross-in-square church on four columns, with a stone templon of 1856. It was built on the ruins of a Roman building whose remains can still be seen in the courtyard, and a Roman mosaic floor was found in one of the cells. The monastery is a listed historic monument.
Kastrosykia, Pidima Kyras, Kanali, Nea Thesi and Mazi form the community of Kanali.
Good to know
- Stop at the Monastery of Agia Pelagia by the main road on the way down to the sea.
- It is the northern end of the long beach that starts at Monolithi, so it is usually quieter than the beaches nearer town.
Help keep it unspoiled: take your rubbish with you, never light fires outdoors in summer, and respect wildlife and local life. How to travel responsibly
