About Ammoudia Beach (Acheron mouth)
Ammoudia is a small fishing village on the Ionian coast, 9 km southeast of Parga, where the river Acheron flows into the sea. Its name means 'sandy place', and its earlier name, Splantza, comes from the Italian spiaggia, beach: both refer to the large sandy beach that fills the bay.
The Acheron delta is part of the Natura 2000 network (GR2140001, about 4,935 hectares), with 19 habitat types and 449 plant species recorded, and the coastal waters off Ammoudia are protected too (GR2140003).
The area is full of myth. The Acheron was the river of the dead, and the Necromanteion, where the ancients came to speak with the souls of the dead, is a few kilometres inland at Mesopotamos. In antiquity a lighthouse on Cape Cheimerio, at the north end of the bay, guided visitors towards it. In 1822 the Maniot hero Kyriakoulis Mavromichalis fell here in the battle of Splantza.
Good to know
- Walk along the riverside to the Acheron mouth, where the river meets the sea.
- Combine it with the Necromanteion at Mesopotamos and the Acheron springs at Glyki.
- The delta is protected: keep to paths and take your rubbish with you.
Help keep it unspoiled: take your rubbish with you, never light fires outdoors in summer, and respect wildlife and local life. How to travel responsibly
