About Agios Georgios at Skafidaki (and the Laskara coast)

Past the fishing village of Agios Thomas, about 8 km from Preveza, the road follows the inner bay of Preveza to Skafidaki. Here stands the small church of Agios Georgios.

In 1727 the Venetian Provveditore Generale da Mar Francesco Correr granted the Skafidaki estate, about 2,200 stremmata at the border with the Ottoman Empire, to captain Georgios Konemenos, for his service in the last Venetian–Ottoman war (1714–1718). The family settled here with the workers of the estate, and around 1730 the captain built the church of his name saint. Both the church and the small settlement appear on Barbié du Bocage's map of 1820, named St. Georges. In 1789 the heirs still kept the church at their own expense. It was thoroughly repaired in the early 19th century: the year 1819 is carved on a stone at the base of its apse. Today it is in public use, with a liturgy and a small village feast every year on St George's day.

The road goes on past the Pogonitsa lagoon, which opens into the bay through a very narrow mouth, to the Skafidaki and Agioi Apostoloi beaches on the way to the tip of the Laskara peninsula, opposite the islet of Gaidaros. On the Tourkovouni hill of Laskara stands the Koulia, a well-preserved fort of the Greek–Ottoman border line of the late 19th century, listed as a monument since 2002.

Good to know

  • It is a small working church, usually opened for services: visit quietly and dress modestly.
  • The St George's day feast (23 April, or Easter Monday when Easter is later) is the day to see it open.
  • Combine it with lunch by the harbour of Agios Thomas and a swim at Agioi Apostoloi on the way back.

Help keep it unspoiled: take your rubbish with you, never light fires outdoors in summer, and respect wildlife and local life. How to travel responsibly
