Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos

Preveza town

A parish church on a site used since about 1720, once the church of the British subjects of Preveza; the present domed basilica was completed in 1974.

About Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos

Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos is one of Preveza's nine parish churches. The present building, a three-aisled basilica with a dome, was completed in 1974, but it is the fourth church on the same site.

The first, a small private church, was built around 1720, in the first years of the second Venetian period, when the priests Chrysanthos Skiadaresis and Michos Vrettos bought the plot. In the 18th century its parish was the most populous in town. It was badly damaged in the destruction of Preveza in 1798 and repaired around 1800.

In those years British subjects, including all Ionian Islanders, worshipped here, because its owner was from Ithaca and counted as British. That is why it is the only church marked in Preveza on a British Admiralty chart of 1830.

Good to know

  • It is a working parish church: visit outside services and dress modestly.
  • The modern interior has a large carved iconostasis and a painted apse.
