Agios Charalambos (Metropolitan Church)
Old town centre, by the clock tower, Preveza

Preveza's metropolitan church, built around 1731 under Venetian rule, beside the clock tower in the heart of the old town.
About Agios Charalambos (Metropolitan Church)
Agios Charalambos is the metropolitan church of Preveza and one of the oldest in the town. It stands in the centre of old Preveza next to the clock tower, and together they dominate the historic streets.
Its story is unusually well documented. On 23 May 1731, the Venetian Provveditore Generale da Mar, Marc'Antonio Diedo, approved the founding of the church's brotherhood, with 47 founding members, and granted the plot. The church was built straight away and certainly before 1734, at the start of Preveza's second Venetian period. Only Agios Nikolaos and Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos among the surviving churches are older.
The present building is a timber-roofed, single-nave basilica with clear features of the Ionian Baroque, the style of the nearby Ionian Islands.
Good to know
- It is a working parish church: visit outside services and dress modestly.
- The clock tower beside it is the landmark of the old town; the two make a good start to a walk through the centre.
