About Perama Cave (Ioannina)

The Perama Cave lies beside Lake Pamvotis at Perama, 4 km from the city of Ioannina and about 104 km (1 hour 45 minutes) from Preveza. It was discovered by chance in 1940, during the Second World War, and first photographed after the war by Konstantinos Kasvikis, a gym teacher and amateur caver.

Ioannis and Anna Petrocheilou, founders of the Hellenic Speleological Society, then explored and mapped it, and it became the first cave in Greece laid out for visitors. It is a chain of halls and passages with stalactites, stalagmites, curtains and clusters of columns. In 1956, fossil teeth and bones of the cave bear were found inside.

The cave covers 14,800 m², and the visitor route is 1,100 m long in all.

Good to know

  • Combine it with Ioannina, 5 km away: the castle, the lake and the island are a short drive.
  • Check the current opening hours and ticket before you go.

Help keep it unspoiled: take your rubbish with you, never light fires outdoors in summer, and respect wildlife and local life. How to travel responsibly
