A Venetian-era harbour town about an hour north of Preveza, with a hilltop castle, an islet in the bay and beaches within walking distance.

About Parga

Parga climbs a green hillside above a small bay on the Ionian coast, about 61 km (an hour) north of Preveza. Its houses look across Kryoneri, the town beach, to the islet of Panagia in the bay.

The town was under Venice from 1401, and its history shows in the castle above the harbour: rebuilt by the Venetians, burned by Barbarossa in 1537 and rebuilt again, it held out until 1819. That year Britain handed Parga to Ali Pasha of Ioannina, and many of its people left for Corfu rather than live under him. The winged lion of Saint Mark still marks the castle gate.

Beyond Kryoneri, Valtos is the long beach on the other side of the castle hill, Lichnos is about 3 km away, and small boats from the port reach Sarakiniko, about 12 km along the coast. In summer, boats link Parga with Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu.

Good to know

  • Walk up to the castle from the harbour for the view over both bays, then go down to Valtos for a swim.
  • Combine it with the Acheron: the Necromanteion and the springs at Glyki are on the way.
