A seaside resort on the east coast of Lefkada, facing the islets of Madouri, Skorpios, Skorpidi and Sparti, and the starting point for boats around the island.
About Nydri (Lefkada)
Nydri is a resort on the east coast of Lefkada, 16 km south of Lefkada town and about 44 km (50 minutes) from Preveza. In the sea in front of it lie several small islands: Madouri, Skorpios, Skorpidi and Sparti.
The village became known after 1963, when the shipowner Aristotle Onassis bought Skorpios across the water; a statue of Onassis stands at the harbour. Skorpios now belongs to the Ribolovlev family.
The German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld believed that Lefkada was Homer's Ithaca, and he dug in the plain of Nydri, finding Bronze Age burial mounds. He spent the last years of his life here and is buried at Nydri. The plain of Nydri up to the slopes of Mount Skaros is a listed archaeological site.
In summer, day boats leave Nydri for beaches around Lefkada, including Porto Katsiki on the island's south-west coast.
Good to know
- Use Nydri as the base for a boat day: in summer, boats go from here to Porto Katsiki and other beaches.
- Lefkada town is on the way, 19 km before Nydri, so the two fit in one day.
Help keep it unspoiled: take your rubbish with you, never light fires outdoors in summer, and respect wildlife and local life. How to travel responsibly
