About Cape Lefkatas (Lefkada)

Cape Lefkatas, also called Kavos tis Kyras, is the southern tip of Lefkada, about 75 km (1 hour 30 minutes) from Preveza. In antiquity it was known as the Leucas rock, and its white cliffs may have given the island its name. A lighthouse stands on the cliff top.

Nearby are the ruins of a temple of Apollo Leucatas, to whom the white rock was sacred. In ancient times criminals were thrown from here, and their guilt or innocence was judged by how they survived the fall, the "Leucadian trial". Legend says that the poet Sappho of Lesbos leapt from this rock to free herself from her love for Phaon, and that Artemisia of Caria did the same.

Vasiliki, with its boats along the coast, is the nearest village.

Good to know

  • Combine it with Vasiliki and Porto Katsiki: all three are in the south-west of the island.
  • Keep well back from the cliff edge.

Help keep it unspoiled: take your rubbish with you, never light fires outdoors in summer, and respect wildlife and local life. How to travel responsibly
