A small, green island next to Lefkada with three villages and quiet bays, reached by ferry from Nydri in 25-30 minutes. About 1 hour 20 minutes from Preveza.
About Meganisi
Meganisi lies just east of Lefkada and is the largest of the small islands around it, about 22 km² with its highest point at 301 m. It has three villages: Katomeri, the seat of the municipality, and the ports of Spartochori and Vathy. Skorpios, the well-known private island, belongs to the same municipality. About 1,040 people lived on Meganisi in 2011.
In ancient times the island was called Taphos. In the Bronze Age it was the base of the Teleboans, a seafaring people of pirates; some researchers, among them Wilhelm Dörpfeld, think it was the Homeric island of Krocylea, part of Odysseus' kingdom. The Podi peninsula in the south-west is an archaeological site, and along the west coast are the sea caves of Papanikolis and Giovanis.
In the 19th century most islanders were sailors; today they live from tourism, fishing and farming. The island can only be reached from Lefkada: regular ferries leave Nydri for Spilia, the port of Spartochori, and the crossing takes no more than 25-30 minutes. From Preveza, Nydri is about 45 minutes by car.
Good to know
- Drive to Nydri and take the ferry over: the crossing is short.
- The sea caves are on the west coast and are reached by boat.
Help keep it unspoiled: take your rubbish with you, never light fires outdoors in summer, and respect wildlife and local life. How to travel responsibly
