About Ancient Theatre of Kassope
Kassope was the main city of the Kassopaians, an ancient Epirote tribe. It was founded in the 4th century BC on a plateau about 550 m up the western slopes of Mount Zalongo, near the village of Kamarina. At its height in the late 3rd century BC it had about 8,000–10,000 inhabitants. In 31 BC its people were moved to the newly founded Nikopolis, and the city was abandoned.
The large theatre was built in the 3rd century BC at the foot of the city's highest hill. Its seats look out over the Ambracian Gulf, the Ionian Sea and Lefkada, and the Zalongo monument stands on the ridge behind. Estimates of its size vary, with up to about 6,000 spectators.
For a long time the theatre was overgrown and closed to visitors. The Ephorate of Antiquities of Preveza has been restoring it with the Diazoma association, helped by a 2016 crowdfunding campaign. The first five rows of seats were restored, and in September 2023 the theatre was used again for the first time in about 2,100 years. In March 2026 the restoration and enhancement works were reported complete. The site is also getting an accessible route, with electric vehicles that stop at the theatre and let visitors off in the orchestra.
Near the agora, in the lower part of the city, there is a second, smaller theatre: the Odeion–Bouleuterion. It was used for musical and literary events and probably for the city's council meetings.
Good to know
- The theatre is one stop on a walk through the whole ancient city: agora, Odeion–Bouleuterion, prytaneion, the katagogion (inn) and the old houses. Allow at least an hour.
- The site is on a mountainside. Wear good shoes and bring water and a hat, as there is little shade.
- You need a car: it's about 30 km (under 30 min) north of Preveza.
- The Zalongo monument and the Monastery of Agios Dimitrios are close by.
- Opening hours change by season. Check before you go.
